Attendance Policies

Regular Attendance

Regular, daily attendance is critical to every child’s success and vastly improves their ability to access the curriculum.  Please make regular, daily attendance a priority.

Non-Excusable Absences

We are able to excuse a child’s absence from school for reasons aligned to Education Code only.  We are not able to offer excused absences for the purposes of car trouble, oversleeping, or vacations taken during the school year, which conflict with the instructional calendar.

Excusable Absences

California Education Code 48205 states that a student may be excused legally from school when the absence is due to:

∙ Personal illness or injury.

∙ Quarantine under the direction of a county or city health office.

∙ Medical, dental, or chiropractic services.

∙ Attendance at funeral services for a member of the immediate family.

∙ Justifiable personal reasons, including, but not limited to, an appearance in court, observance of a holiday or ceremony of his or her religion, attendance at religious retreats, attendance at an employment conference, when the pupil's absence has been requested in writing by the parent and approved by the principal or designated representative.

∙ Exclusion for failure to present evidence of immunization.

∙ Exclusion from school because student is either the carrier of a contagious disease or not immunized for a contagious disease.

Reporting Absences

When a student is absent, the absence must be reported to the school using one of the following methods. All absences must be reported no later than three days after the absence, or it will be recorded as a truancy.

1. Parent/Guardian may call the office the day of the absence at (805) 641-5443. Select option 3 when prompted.

2.  Parent/Guardian may report their child’s absence through Parent Square as well.

3. Parent/Guardian may submit a written note stating the reason and date(s) of the absence.

Please include the following information in any method of reporting:

∙ Student's full legal name (please print name clearly)

∙ The day(s) and date(s) of absence(s)

∙ Reason for the absence

∙ Parent/Guardian’s name and signature

Leaving School Early

Students leaving campus early must be signed out in the office by the parent, or an adult identified on the student's Emergency Card with a note from the parent releasing the student to the adult. Parents and guardians are asked to schedule all appointments outside the school day when possible. Teachers are to keep students in class until notified by the office to release the student.
